Skunk

Visual:

The skunk is most known for its black fur and white stripe lining the center of its body from the snout to the end of its tail. The colors of a skunk may vary from black and white to brown grey, and few skunks are even cream colored. All skunks are striped from birth but have also been seen with two thin stripes or many spots.

Senses:

Skunks have excellent smell and hearing but have very poor vision. After ten feet the skunk has little clarity of any object.

Reproduction:

The mating season for the skunk is usually in early spring. The males will mate with multiple female skunks. The female skunk having a gestation period of about 66 days and will give birth to about four to seven baby skunks (kits). The kits are born blind and deaf. It takes up to three weeks for the skunks to open their eyes after birth. The kits will hang around their mothers for about one year after birth.

Behavior:

It is known to be rare for a healthy wild skunk to go around a bite humans. If a skunk is charging and biting at a human it is possible for that skunk to have some sort of illness such as rabies. The skunk is known to spray at an enemy as a defensive move to protect its self or kits from any sort of harm. Not only can this smell be very strong and take a long period of time to get rid of but it may also cause a temporary blindness.

Life Expectancy:

The life expectancy of a skunk usually does not exceed three years, most of these skunks will only live long enough to see about a year. Causes of death can vary from other death of other animals to the death of cars on the road due to their bad eye site.

Feeding:

The skunk is an omnivore, meaning that it eats both plants and animal organs. Its eating habits of a skunk may change as the seasons through the year change. Skunks are known to eat many things such as insects, worms, grubs, rodents, small reptiles, birds, animals eggs, and even grass, fungi, nuts and berries.

Wisconsin RACCOONS

Spring is here and so are the raccoons! Call County Animal Control to take control of your raccoon removal needs.

Visual:

The North American Raccoon or also known as “coon”. The raccoon has distinct features from other mammals in North America. Having its masked face, ringed tail, and thick coat of grayish fur it makes it quite easy to tell this animal apart from the other four legged mammals running around in our region.

Senses:

The raccoon is an intelligent and powerful animal. Just like a human is able to, with its front paws the raccoon is able to grab objects and stand on its rear legs. Even though long distance vision may be a little difficult, the sense of the nose, ears and touch make finding food easy for the raccoon. Its sense of hearing being strong enough to hear something as quiet as an earth worm moving through the dirt. Having strong senses in its front paws and even the tips of their claws make identifying objects easy for the raccoon even with out laying eyes on the object.

Habitat:

The raccoon is known for wooded areas with many trees. Making it easy for the raccoon to climb a tree and steer clear of predators. They are known for housing in underground dens as well. Also wanting to be close to water or marsh areas which provide the necessity’s for survival. Many of you may know the raccoon to house themselves in the middle of the city, inside buildings or even the walls and attic of your own home!

Feeding:

The raccoon is known to be a very omnivorous animal. This meaning it has a wide variety of food in its diet. Foods ranging from insects and worms, fruits or nuts, fish, eggs, easily caught prey, cat/dog food, and as many of you may have experienced…your garbage.

Life Expectancy:

In the wild, the average raccoon usually lives from about one and a half years old to about three years old. Those numbers depend on the surroundings of the animals territory it roams. Hunters, trappers, and traffic have a large influence on the death of the raccoon. Other things that influence the deaths of these animals would be distemper, predators such as the owls, bob cats, or coyotes, and even the fight for survival. Many times half the batch of new born may not make it to see their first year of life. Many young raccoon will be of loss of their mother and become weak with no guidance and experience in finding food which results in death of starvation.

Reproduction:

The mating season can be in the late winter or early spring and can be somewhere around two months in length until birth. The littler size is usually from two to five kits in a batch. The kits are born deaf and blind. They open their eyes for the first time about three to four weeks after birth. The kits do not start eating solid foods until about six to nine weeks after birth. After eating solid foods the mother takes this time to show the young the way of life, feeding, housing, den areas, and by fall the group may split up. It is not unusual to see yearling stick with the group.

People vs. Raccoon:

Many people think of the raccoon as a pest. This is because many occasions people will have encounters with this animal digging through the garbage, making a disgusting mess by shredding through everything you’ve thrown in there throughout the week. Another reason may be because the animals digging up your lawn, looking for underground food. People have found raccoon’s helping themselves to dog/cat dishes outside or even letting themselves in through the dog/cat door and finding them in their kitchen. A costly encounter people have with these animals is them housing under your roof. Cases increasing from soffit panels being ripped out of the way for entry, to even the animal ripping shingles off the roof and coming straight through! From there they are able to make themselves at home, which also means having to use a laboratory. These animals do designate a certain spot in your attic to leave their feces and they are very stinky animals. Them urinating and leaving their droppings up there can cause damage to the insulation. The feces can carry diseases such as the roundworm which is caused by contaminated objects or foods entering the body. DO NOT underestimate the raccoon. This animal has impressive strength and intelligence and should be dealt with before any further issues occur. If assistance is needed feel free to call:

Wisconsin BATS

Spring is here and so are the bats! Call County Animal Control to take control of your bat removal needs.

 Visual:

The most common species of bats found in Northern America are of the Big Brown Bats and the Little Brown Bats. The “brown” in the names of these two species comes from the color of their fur, being dark brown. The Little Brown Bat has small blackish ears, a wingspan ranging from 8-10 inches, and body length of about 2-3 inches. The Big Brown Bat is extremely similar to the Little Brown Bat, just some minor differences in length and width. Just like the Little Brown Bat, the Big Brown Bat has dark brown fur with blackish ears. The wingspan on a Big Brown Bat can be up to 10-12 inches in width and a body length of about 4 inches long.

Habitat:

When people think of bats they either think of vampires, or they think of tons and tons of bats flying from out of a cave after being disturbed. The cave theory is indeed accurate but it does not end there.  Bats will have different types of roosting areas, one for the day, one for the night, one for nursing their young, and maybe even a hibernation roost all depending on what temperature is most comfort for them at a given time. These roosts can be found in many different areas aside from an actual cave. That cave may be substituted by a hollowed out tree, underneath bridges, and extremely commonly found in attics or walls of buildings and homes. Though bats are said to be animals that participate in the hibernation and migrating process. Don’t be completely fooled by the terms, as we have seen geese and ducks walking around on the iced over lakes.

Reproduction:

After the mating process between a male bat and a female bat, the females then part from the males. The females tend to roost up in a colony with other female bats; this is where they sort of have a nursery. These female bats will roost in the same location together, this is typically where the newborns are born, and raised up. Upon experience, we have found that the baby bats are usually between late May and into June. Every female bat will tend to have one newborn per year. Gestation of bats can take up to about 60 days. It takes a few weeks after birth for these bats to learn how to fly on their own and about a month after birth these bats can grow to the size of the other adult bats.

Feeding:

The Little Brown Bats and Big Brown Bats are both known to feed off insects. These brown bats will sweep through the air snatching up things like flies, mosquitos, moths, gnats, and many more.

Life Expectancy:

The Little Brown Bat and the Big Brown Bat can live anywhere between 10 to 20 years, if not, than more. The lives of bats may be shortened due to other animals preying on them for feed. There are a low number of bats that actually suffer by carrying rabies.

Wisconsin Opossum

Opossum removal

The opossum is often known for playing “dead” or playing “opossum”. This happens when the opossum has been frightened or is in danger.

The Wisconsin Opossum

Spring is here and so are the opossums! Call County Animal Control to take control of your opossum removal needs.

Visual:

The opossum is a marsupial meaning that it has a pouch. The opossum is a small-medium sized animal. The animal has a white to grayish coat of fur. You can strongly tell the difference of the opossum from other animals by their large rat like tail.

Habitat:

The opossum will normally take over abandoned dens or holes that have been built by other animals. This animal will stay in one area for as long as possible. Whether it is a wooded area or residential, if there is a great amount of food and water provided to this animal, there is no need to leave.

Feeding:

The opossum is an omnivore. It is highly known for feeding off of roadkill or other dead animals.  Some favorite foods may include fruits. Other foods seem to find their way into their diet as well which include insects, worms, frogs, birds, snakes and even your curbside garbage!

Life Expectancy:

The opossum does not have a very long life expectancy. Usually ranging from around two to four years old. The life of the opossum varies a bit due to many of them turning into roadside roadkill.

Reproduction:

The gestation period for these marsupials are similar to many mammals. The young are born in an earlier stage than most animals, so they then move into the pouch of the momma opossum where they can be carried around and feed off of the teat as well. The mother gives birth to many young and the failure rate for the life of the young is fairly high. Up to thirteen babies can attach to a teat and have a chance of their survival. Weaning period can be anywhere from 70 days to about 125 days and they then may detach from the teat and start on their own!
